Stakeholder Meeting with Parliamentary Committee on Local Government and Rural Development.
Decentralisation and local government is considered to be the hub around which Ghana's democracy revolves. This is enshrined in the 1992 Constitution and Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462). However, according to many analysts the processes of decentralisation and devolution of powers have become rather sluggish of late. It appeared to be important, to organize jointly with Parliament's Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development a stakeholder meeting on challenges to Ghana's decentralization process, which was held from 23 rd - 25 th September 2005.
Think Tank on Local Government.
Bringing together practitioners, representatives of different Ministries and Agencies, Academics and long-time advocates for decentralization and devolution, the informal Think Tank on Local Government meets regularly to make inputs into the relevant political debates. Relevant issues and proposals pending at different organizations and levels are being consulted upon and concrete suggestions are being made. During 2005 the Think Tank deliberations focused primarily on challenges related to financial decentralization. A Think Tank publication on the issue is foreseen for 2006. |
